The Plaza Live renovations to be complete by Galactic’s 01/16 Show

The Plaza Live has been undergoing a serious makeover. Renovations started in August and the end is now in sight. With an enhanced soundsystem and re-engineered acoustics, the Plaza Live looks forward to being the most aurally pleasing venue in the greater Orlando area. New Orleans funk legends Galactic will have the honor of headlining the first show following renovations.

If you are unfamiliar with Galactic, let us fill you in!

Originally formed in 1994 as an octet (under the name Galactic Prophylactic) and including singer Chris Lane and guitarist Rob Gowen, the group was soon pared down to a sextet of: guitarist Jeff Raines, bassist Robert Mercurio, drummer Stanton Moore, Hammond organist Rich Vogel, Theryl DeClouet on vocals, and later adding saxophonist Ben Ellman.

The group was started when Raines and Mercurio, childhood friends from the Washington D.C. area, moved to New Orleans together to attend college at Tulane and Loyola Universities, and became enamored of the local funk scene, populated by such legendary acts as The Meters and Dirty Dozen Brass Band and inspired by local legends such as Professor Longhair. There they teamed with noted New Orleans drummer Stanton Moore, saxophonist/harmonica (now producer) Ben Ellman, and Rich Vogel. In 2004, the band parted ways with vocalist DeClouet, and now continue as an instrumental group. They have been releasing albums consistently since 1996.

We hope you are as excited as us about the renovations and the funk that’s about to take over our bodies. We’ll see you on January 16th as our state-of-the-art sound system is blessed by a handful of legendary New Orleans funk musicians!

Up and Coming Changes to the Plaza Live Orlando

Starting Monday, August 20, the Plaza Live will be closing to facilitate roof renovations that will continue until Saturday, September 22. Unfortunately, we had to move Steve Aoki’s Acid Circus show to a different venue, The Roxy on August 30, 2012. However, you have many more shows to look forward to after renovations! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Jeff Garlin, Donovan Frankenreiter, Mike Birbiglia, and many more awesome performers, will be gracing our new and improved venue!

Why is August 20th an important date?

Because it’s What Wouldstock Jambando at the Plaza.

A tribute with a twist… Jambando asks the question, “What would have happened if THESE bands played THAT festival?” Featuring the music of the bands that we think should have played at Woodstock in 1969 but didn’t including:  The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Cream, Van Morrison, James Brown, Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Jeff Beck Group, Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, The Fifth Dimension, The Chicago Transit Authority… and who else??

Featuring covers by Thomas Wynn & The Believers, Shak Nasti, funkUs, Sonar, The Outer Toons, Marley’s Collie, Daz Voodoo, The Funky Presidents, Crazy Otto, Flat Mountain Band, Cope, Roland Simmons, and Juno Smile.

All this for only $10.00 at the door or $5.00 if you track down one of the bands and get a 1/2 price ticket.

Rain or shine it’s going to be a great time.

John Waite- From Old to New

John Waite, the English rock singer and lead vocalist for The Baby’s and Bad English is best known for his hit single, “Missing You” which debuted as a #1 Billboard hit in 1984. The song “Missing You” was released as a duet with Allison Krauss in 2006 which reached the Top 40 on the country charts in the U.S.

BUT, what you probably didn’t know was that John Waite has recently released a 2011 album “Rough & Tumble” that showcases a whole different style. Waite says of “Rough & Tumble”, “I consider this album a new beginning. I approached this project with an entirely different ambition musically than I’ve had in the past. It’s the first record I’ve made that I think is made up of singles. All 12 tracks are contenders.”
Another interesting fact: “Rough & Tumble” was written and produced with Matchbox Twenty lead guitarist, Kyle Cook. Adding a new flavor to the material, Waite reflects on the differences “It’s not like what people would expect from me. It’s a step to the left. There’s a rock imprint on the music and a melodic presence, but it has just shifted gears. It’s an extreme record. It has an identity and a philosophy of its own, which is really fresh for me.”
Two songs that showcase the Waite/Cook collaboration are the 70’s funk, dance floor groove, “Evil” which is reminiscent of the group Jamiroquai, and definitely a step in a different direction for Waite. On another note, “Better Off Gone” has a country radio, Counting Crows feel to it that is a perfect mix of both Waite and Cook’s styles.
Still a fan of old fashioned rock, Waite tells billboard.com, “As I look around me, everybody’s so produced. They’re on stage playing along to tapes. They don’t care. Rock n’ roll seems to be on vacation. I don’t like studio manicured things. I like imperfection.”

So what can you expect at this John Waite concert? A solid rock performance (imperfections and all), a mix of old songs and new, and an intimate personal setting.

Tickets are $25-$39 and can be purchased online at www.plazaliveorlando.com, by phone 407.228.1220 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              407.228.1220      end_of_the_skype_highlighting, or in person at the box office.
